  • The Baltic States is a term, which nowadays refers to three countries in Northern Europe: Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania
  • total population: 6.2 million
  • total territory: 175 127 sq. km
  • largest cities: Riga – 643 000, Vilnius – 539 000, Kaunas –  355 000, Tallinn – 434 000
  • in the Cold war context Baltic countries were considered to be a part of Soviet Union, but culturally and historically it is more appropriate to view all the Baltic Sea countries as a part of Europe, where the historical impact of the Hanseatic League, the Russian Empire, and the German Empire have been of crucial importance
  • after the Baltic states had restored independence in early 1990-ies, integration with Western Europe was chosen as the main strategic goal. Applying to become members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the European Union (EU) was the major step towards political and economical development. Membership of NATO was duly achieved 29th March 2004 and accession to the EU took place 1st May 2004
  • today the Baltic States are liberal democracies, parliamentary republics, and growing market economies. The Baltic states had the highest growth rates in Europe between 2000 and 2007. The economies were hard-hit by the financial crisis of 2008–2010. By applying extreme austerity measures Baltic countries has overcome downturn after 2011 and often cited as models to follow
  • Estonia adopted the euro in January 2011, Latvia in January 2014, and Lithuania in January 2015
